Measuring your windows correctly is the first step to ensuring your new blinds fit perfectly. Whether you’re ordering custom blinds or buying ready-made, accurate measurements save time, money, and frustration. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Decide on Inside Mount or Outside Mount
Inside mount blinds fit within the window frame for a clean, built-in look.
Outside mount blinds cover the frame and extend past the edges, ideal if you want to make windows look larger or block more light.
Step 2: Measure for Inside Mount Blinds
Width: Measure across the top, middle, and bottom of the window frame. Record the smallest measurement.
Height: Measure from the top of the inside frame down to the windowsill on the left, middle, and right. Record the longest measurement.
Depth: Ensure the window frame is deep enough to accommodate the blind style you’ve chosen.
Step 3: Measure for Outside Mount Blinds
Width: Measure the full width of the area you want covered. Add 2–3 inches on each side for maximum light control.
Height: Measure from the top of where you’ll mount the blind down to where you want it to end. Add 2–3 inches above the window frame for proper coverage.
Step 4: Double-Check Your Measurements
Always measure to the nearest 1/8 inch, and write each number down clearly. When in doubt, remeasure before ordering.
Quick Tips
Use a steel tape measure for accuracy.
Don’t round up or down.
Mark whether your measurements are for an inside or outside mount when placing an order.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure your blinds fit perfectly and provide the style, privacy, and light control your home needs.
